Nafs

Lit. “self” or “soul.” This is not to be confused with the ruh or “spirit.” The nafs is usually divided into many parts, depending on the science with which it is studied (i.e. philosophical ethics vs sufism/irfan vs a Quran and hadith perspective.) The nafs al-amaarah bisoo’ is the part of the soul that commands toward evil.
