Haraam
Lit. “forbidden” or “sinful.” One of five classifications for an action in fiqh or Islamic Law. A Divine prohibition for which a believer will be brought closer to Allah and rewarded in the hereafter if he/she avoids it, but will take a believer away from Allah and be punished if it is performed. For example, murder, adultery, lying, slander, bearing false witness, disrespecting one’s parents, neglecting one’s prayers, and so forth. It is the opposite of wajib.
