Maqaasid
This is a technical term in fiqh which literally means “the aims.” Usually it is short term for “maqaasidul Shariah” which means “the aims of the Shariah.” Scholars have slightly different lists, but generally they include things like the right to property, life, safety, and so forth. This is one factor which a scholar must account for when issuing a fatwa (i.e. is this fatwa in line with the aims of the Shariah or not?)
